Film@Fram: Belfast (2022) 12A
Wed, 04 May 2022 19:30
Kenneth Branagh, who grew up in Belfast, directs this semi-autobiographical and poignant story of love, laughter and loss in one boy's childhood, just at the onset of the Troubles. Filmed mainly in black and white, with some flashes of colour.
It's emotionally affecting but warm enough to be a crowd-pleaser, and Judi Dench and Ciaran Hinds are delightful as Buddy's grandparents.
"There is a terrific warmth and tenderness to Kenneth Branagh's elegiac, autobiographical movie about the Belfast of his childhood: spryly written, beautifully acted and shot in a lustrous monochrome, with set pieces, madeleines and epiphanies that feel like a more emollient version of Terence Davies. Some may feel that the film is sentimental or that it does not sufficiently conform to the template of political anger and despair considered appropriate for dramas about Northern Ireland and the Troubles. And yes, there is certainly a spoonful of sugar (or two) in the mix, with some mandatory Van Morrison on the soundtrack." The Guardian
"Branagh has an easy way with a camera and isn't afraid of sentiment, but he offsets this with a good line in comedy that cuts through the softer stuff like an astringent. . . Although this community would go on to be largely defined by strife in the eyes of the world for many years to follow, Branagh makes sure that what we chiefly feel is the love." Eye for Film
"Dench, like the whole cast, is irresistible." Evening Standard

The Big Plastic Count
Mon, 16 May 2022
The Big Plastic Count needs as many households as possible to take part in the survey which runs for a week from 16th to 22nd May.
Let's uncover the truth about plastic waste – and compare results!
THE PROBLEM: "Nobody really knows how much plastic we're throwing away or what happens to it, and we suspect it's worse than anyone realises. Recycling alone isn't going to solve the plastic problem. There's simply too much of it and our recycling systems can't cope. And right now, there just aren't enough reusable options that work for everyone."
THE SOLUTION: "Greenpeace and Everyday Plastic have launched the nation's biggest ever investigation into household plastic waste. Together, we will uncover the truth about how much household plastic we throw away, and how much is really recycled. This new evidence will be crucial to convince the government, big brands and supermarkets to take ambitious action on plastic packaging."

Film@Fram: THE ELECTRICAL LIFE OF LOUIS WAIN (2021) 12A
Wed, 01 Jun 2022 19:30
Director: Will Sharpe With Benedict Cumberbatch, Claire Foy
Runtime: 111 mins
LANGUAGE: ENGLISH
The true story of eccentric British artist Louis Wain (Benedict Cumberbatch), whose playful, psychedelic pictures transformed the public's perception of cats forever. Beginning in the 1880s, we follow Wain as he seeks to unlock the "electrical" mysteries of the world and, in so doing, to better understand his own life and the profound love he shares with his wife Emily Richardson (Claire Foy).
Doors open: 19:00. Members: £4, Visitors/Guests: £6
"As tragic biopics go, "The Electrical Life of Louis Wain" isn't interested in wallowing in misery. Instead, this amusing retelling of Wain's life is a way to introduce his quirky illustrations to a new generation, putting them in a new light that's more in line with the irreverent and animated creatures Wain once imagined years ago." The Wrap
"Aa warm and moving recounting of the man who arguably invented the modern idea of the cat." Austin Chronicle
"An affecting portrait of a creative but troubled man." The Guardian
"A poignant biographical portrait starring an irresistible Benedict Cumberbatch." New York Times
