 The Brownsord Way - A circular walk
The Brownsord Way is named in memory of Miss Ella Brownsord who for nearly thirty years was a member of Framlingham Town Council and Chairman of the Footpaths Committee. It was through her efforts that the footpaths around Framlingham are still open. The Brownsord Way takes a circular 20 mile route and if undertaken in its entirety 5-6 hours. Member of a well known Framlingham family Miss Ella K. Brownsord, retired as headmistress of Great Glemham Voluntary Controlled Primary School yesterday having spent nearly 40 years in the teaching profession. Educated at Mills Grammar School, Framlingham and Whitelands College she was in time appointed headmistress of Sir Robert Hitcham's Girls' School at Framlingham; a position she held for ten years. On the reorganisation of senior schools she was appointed headmistress of the Maidstone Road Junior School at Felixstowe. On the outbreak of war evacuees came to Felixstowe from Dagenham and West Ham doubling the school roll to 500. Later the Dunkirk campaign caused the Felixstowe evacuation and Miss Brownsord, her staff and her pupils were sent to Birmingham. Recalled to Suffolk Miss Brownsord started the Leiston Day War Nursery for the East Suffolk Public Health Department. During the latter part of the war she became a form mistress at Framlingham College and later a form mistress on the opening of the Junior School at Brandeston Hall. From there she was appointed headmistress of Great Glemham School where she has been for the past 11 years. At the school yesterday afternoon the Rev. M. O. Dewsbury (deputising for the Earl of Cranbrook, chairman of the Managers, who was indisposed) presented Miss Brownsord with a cheque on behalf of the managers as an appreciation of her services. Other gifts included a handbag from the schoolchildren (presented by Trevor Crane) and a bouquet by a member of the primary class (Linda Clifford). At Framlingham, Miss Brownsord has taken an active part in several of the town's activities. She was assistant secretary of the Parochial Church Council for many years and has been Secretary of the Framlingham Tennis Club. She is a member of the Cecil Sharp Folk Dance Society. |
