Green Water
Added on Wednesday 14th June

A number of readers have noticed that the water in the river appears to be a sort of neon green. The Environment Agency has detected some potentially highly toxic Blue Green algae in the river outside the Co-op which has been traced back to the Mere.

It is important that people and dogs do not enter, touch or drink any water in the Mere or adjoining tributaries, [such as along by the Fens], until further notice

You might also notice a bit of an aroma, as the algae dying off can sometimes smell like rotting vegetation. It likes warm condiitons and it is hoped there will be some rain soon to disperse it.
